After talking last week about God the Father as creator and source it was time to look upon our Father in Heaven in fact as a daddy who loves us immensely and wants nothing more than to be with us forever.
The goal was to also equip the children to have an answer prepared for those who might ask why God would let bad things happen to good people. With the aid of raw, dry, un-brewed tea we were able to see that according to God we, just as dry tea, are quite disgusting on our own.(Gen 3:17-19) Two brave youngsters found this to be a true statement as they ate the ground tea leaves.
Note: Puking was unintentionally found to be a side effect of eating dry tea.
It is only when we add hot water (Jesus) to the tea (us) that we have something good. Some difficulty in answering the first question was realized as we searched God’s word and came to the conclusion that there are no good people.(Rom 3:10-18) In realizing this we were lead into a restatement of our question. We found that the better question to ask was why God would let good things happen to bad people? Of course the answer was given in just one word: Christ. (Rom 5:6) After this it was clear that God doesn’t give us what we deserve, which is exactly those bad things; He has provided a way for us not to be slaves to bad things anymore.(Rom 6:23) Instead we are able to help and love others when bad things do happen, and so giving God glory and honor.(Matt 7:12, 22:39) At the end of the night the kids learned that God gives us a way, through Christ, to know once again what good really is, and be changed by it.
Key Thought: There are no good people. Only God is good.
Our memory verse this week is Hebrews 11:1-2…
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.
